Doctor Phillips has a theory: the blood of the vampire flows through Harriet’s veins, and she is draining the life out of those she loves. Everyone she gets close to seems to sicken or die. But there is something strange about Harriet. Beautiful and talented, Harriet will gain the affections of many of the men and women she meets and a bright future seems assured for her. I found it very interesting from a historical point of view and I found myself caring for the characters. The story revolves around matters such as heredity, race, sexuality and feminism. That being said, I really did enjoy this book. Please do not pick up this book expecting that, you would only do it an injustice. There is no biting, no sharp teeth, no blood even. I cannot stress enough that this is not a typical vampire novel. Dark family secrets are revealed and a sort of struggle for life is begun. She soon finds some friends but anyone she gets close to seem to eventually sicken and die. She is unusual in her behaviour but very friendly and kind. The story is about a young heiress of wealth and beauty who have just come of age and therefore left the caribbean abbey where she has spent the last ten years since her parents died. It is more of a drama really, or possibly a thriller. I would also, personally, refrain from calling this a horror novel. It entirely depends upon how flexible you are with the definition. The thing is though that this can barely be called a vampire novel.

It is often mentioned as ”that other vampire novel of that year”. It was published in 1897, the very same year as Bram Stoker´s Dracula. This book is interesting in a lot of ways.
